The characterisation of atelier materials and of the historical commercial formulation of paint materials has recently gained new interest in the field of conservation science applied to modern and contemporary art, since modern paint materials are subjected to peculiar and often unpredictable degradation and fading processes. Assessing the composition of the original materials purchased by artists can guide not only their identification in works of art, but also their restoration and conservation. Advances in characterisation methods and models for data interpretation are particularly important in studying organic coloring materials in the transition period corresponding to the late 19th—early 20th century, when many such variants or combinations were hypothetically possible in their formulations. There is thus a need for reliable databases of materials introduced in that period and for gaining chemical knowledge at a molecular level related to modern organic pigments, by state-of-the-art protocols. This paper reports on the results of a study on 44 samples of historical colorants in powder and paint tubes, containing both lake pigments and synthetic organic pigments dating from to The focus of the chemical analyses was to reveal the composition of the historical organic lake pigments including minor components, to discriminate between different recipes for the extraction of chromophore-containing molecules from the raw materials, and ultimately to distinguish between different formulations and recipes.

Liquid chromatography—mass spectrometry LC—MS is an analytical chemistry technique that combines the physical separation capabilities of liquid chromatography or HPLC with the mass analysis capabilities of mass spectrometry MS. Coupled chromatography – MS systems are popular in chemical analysis because the individual capabilities of each technique are enhanced synergistically.
While liquid chromatography separates mixtures with multiple components, mass spectrometry provides structural identity of the individual components with high molecular specificity and detection sensitivity. This tandem technique can be used to analyze biochemical, organic, and inorganic compounds commonly found in complex samples of environmental and biological origin.
Therefore, LC-MS may be applied in a wide range of sectors including biotechnology , environment monitoring, food processing , and pharmaceutical , agrochemical , and cosmetic industries. In addition to the liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry devices, an LC-MS system contains an interface that efficiently transfers the separated components from the LC column into the MS ion source. Thus, it is not possible to directly pump the eluate from the LC column into the MS source.
Overall, the interface is a mechanically simple part of the LC-MS system that transfers the maximum amount of analyte, removes a significant portion of the mobile phase used in LC and preserves the chemical identity of the chromatography products chemically inert. As a requirement, the interface should not interfere with the ionizing efficiency and vacuum conditions of the MS system. These interfaces became available in the s after a two decade long research and development process.
The coupling of chromatography with MS is a well developed chemical analysis strategy dating back from the s. James and A.

As of [update] , it has approximately 3. In , Pew Research estimated that 1. Historically various Lutheran churches in the United States formed out of association of congregations formed related to national immigration waves. The American Lutheran Church ALC , with headquarters in Minneapolis , Minnesota , was influenced by descendants of the waves of Scandinavian and German immigration to the Midwest in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Over time, the national or ethnic identification by certain church associations lessened as descendants became more assimilated into general American society. Members across organizations began to have more in common as areas of the country urbanized and more people made their livings in suburbs and cities, rather than in rural farming areas. The ALC and LCA were already the result of earlier mergers among associated congregations once related to ethnic immigrant groups. In , a survey by Strommen et al.

By Kirk Reynolds. The global flood as described in the Bible has been attacked by Christians as well as non-Christians. Those Christians who do not hold to a literal reading of Genesis are willing to believe in the old age of the earth as proposed by evolution. This belief states that the universe came into existence approximately 12 billion years ago through the Big Bang. There are several theories of creation based on this evolutionary timeline, such as Progressive Creation, Gap Theory, Framework Hypothesis, and Theistic Evolution.
None of these theories allow for the literal six-day creation as plainly contained in the Bible. In the case of Progressive Creation, it is believed that each day represents eons of time. The Framework Hypothesis mixes literal creation days with long periods of time. The Gap Theory argues that there is a gap between Genesis and which allows for a long period of time.
Finally, Theistic Evolution proposes that God used evolution in the creation process. All of these theories have in common a belief that the creation account given in Genesis 1 and 2 contain allegory and should not be taken literally.

I’ve gotten into a pretty serious relationship with a Baptist girl. She and I have realized from the start of the relationship that being on the same page in the longterm is important. However, speaking to her about the real presence in the sacrament and the reasons for infant baptism have come to very little avail. Any recommendations on what I could do to help bring her around?

In our context, discipleship refers to our relationship with Jesus as more than just knowing Him, but also following Him. Discipleship means that our relationship with Jesus is one of continually learning from Him Bible study , and putting into practice what He has taught us service to others , as He Himself walks with us Sunday morning services. God gives us opportunities every day of the week to show our love for Him by loving those around us according to His command.
God also gives us opportunities to receive from Him what we cannot earn by our imperfect love and obedience. While this may seem unusual to many Americans, it is in fact the standard practice of most churches dating back to ancient times. Please make an appointment with one of our pastors for more information. Bible study hour is probably the best way to get to know a congregation since you can meet people and ask questions much more easily than in a worship format.

Grewal today filed suit against two separate out-of-state companies which previously sold illegal large capacity magazines LCMs to undercover state investigators in New Jersey, and which have failed to comply with state subpoenas demanding the records of their New Jersey sales. New Jersey law prohibits the possession and sale of firearm magazines that are capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition. LCMs allow a shooter to fire an unusually high number of bullets at a time, without requiring the shooter to even pause and reload.
As a result, violence that involves LCMs can result in more shots fired, persons wounded, and wounds per victim than other gun attacks.

More on LCMS. The intent of FEF was to study forest management and water yield in the subalpine zone. Today, research primarily deals with water quality and water quantity and their relationship to forest vegetation and management. FEF vegetation is characteristic of subalpine forests and subalpine wetlands. Subalpine fir Abies lasiocarpa and Engelmann spruce Picea engelmannii are the dominant tree species, at higher elevations, or north-facing slopes.
Lodgepole pine Pinus contorta is the dominant tree species at lower elevations and drier, south-facing slopes. The research plots were located within two forest types: a forest established in after a stand-replacing fire and a forest that was clearcut in the s. In measured plots, maximum tree age is years, tree density is stems per hectare, tree height is Understory vegetation is generally herbaceous annuals or perennials, or willow Salix spp.
Freezing temperatures may be observed at any time of year. Most precipitation falls as snow, and snow cover lasts from as early as October through July.

To clarify whether and when a handgun was fired, forensic scientists search for and analyze Gunshot Residue GSR deposits. One highly interesting aspect of GSR is the presence of volatile organic chemical residues, which can offer clues as to when a weapon was fired. An innovative extraction technique based on Headspace Sorptive Extraction HSSE and Gerstel Twister has now been shown to extract additional information from spent cartridges.
When investigating a crime that was carried out using a firearm, it is often of critical importance to determine whether gunshot residue GSR can be found at the crime scene or on weapons potentially used. Such a finding can enable detectives to identify — or rule out — a firearm as the weapon used and potentially link it to a suspect. Further, given the right technique, chemical analysis can shed light on the time elapsed since a weapon was last fired.
