But despite the tourism, the village has kept all its charm, its traditions and its authenticity. In winter, you find another atmosphere with its long and deserted sandy beaches, the salty sea air, the gentle breaking of the waves and the cries of the seagulls Until the month of May and the gypsies’ pilgrimage, when the party gets started again! Papal control persisted until when, during the French Revolution , it became part of France. The town is now the capital of the Vaucluse department and one of the few French cities to have preserved its ramparts. The medieval monuments and the annual Festival d’Avignon have helped to make the town a major centre for tourism. The region around Avignon is very rich in limestone which is used for building material. For example, the current ramparts, measuring 4, metres long, were built with the soft limestone abundant in the region called mollasse burdigalienne.
Enclosed by the ramparts, the Rocher des Doms is a limestone elevation of urgonian type, 35 metres high and therefore safe from flooding of the Rhone which it overlooks and is the original core of the city. The other significant elevation in the commune is the Montfavet Hill — a wooded hill in the east of the commune. The Rhone Valley is an old alluvial zone: loose deposits cover much of the ground. It consists of sandy alluvium more or less coloured with pebbles consisting mainly of siliceous rocks.
The relief is quite low despite the creation of mounds allowing local protection from flooding.

Uzes is a beautiful medieval town, seat of the Dukes of Uzes, about 40 minutes from Avignon. The museum itself is quite interesting, covering the history and the making of sweets with several interactive exhibits, but younger kids will be more excited by the free sweets and the shop where you can buy 1 kg tubs of Haribo.
So, if the length of the queue puts you off, you may be able to get away with popping into the Carrefour down the road and picking up a few tubs of Haribo there instead.

Every year, the Camargue races bring together bull racing enthusiasts. La Cocarde d’Or, the most prestigious of them all, is the ultimate race that all “razeteur” dreams of winning. From the beginning of April until the end of October the races take place in the Arles Arena and in the small villages surrounding Arles. It is the main event of the taurine season, and the most prestigious of the Camargue races.
They are organised in cooperation with the school of razeteurs. The “jeu taurin” bull game lies at the origin of the races: animals of all shapes and sizes and farmhands come together to fight and play with the bull. The oldest record of the origins of the Camargue races dates from : a race was organized in Arles in honour of Louis II, count of Provence. Later, towards the end of the 19th century, the ‘jeu taurin’ became less cruel, where it was only men that would play with the bull: the ‘attributs’ were fixed on the bull’s horns red-white-and-blue rosettes, flowers, scarves in the colours of the herd and had to be removed by the young enthusiasts.
In s bull breeders became aware of the importance of the “Camargue” race of bulls, whose morphology and fighting spirit suits it more to racing rather than to work or meat production. So, since the beginning of the century, small fortunate arenas began to see bulls of great calibre clash with men that had mastered the art of the ‘razet’.
